Guideline Synthesis: Obesity in Children

This synthesis entitled Overweight and obesity in children and adolescents: Assessment, prevention, and management took the guidelines proposed by:
  • American Academy of Pediatrics
  • American Heart Association
  • Registered Nurses Association of Ontario
  • Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network
  • Singapore Ministry of Health, and
  • U.S. Preventive Services Task Force
and directly compared each of them for:
  • objectives and scope
  • target population
  • guideline's intended users
  • interventions and practices considered
The report then goes on the compare recommendations for:
  • assessment and classification of overweight/obesity
  • assessment of other risk factors
  • strategies for prevention of obesity
  • Management of Overweight and Obesity
The third table compares the benefits and harms from each guideline, and the last table explains the levels of evidence used for each guideline.

The National Guideline Clearinghouse regularly performs and posts Guideline Syntheses to its website. Other topics that might be of interest include Screening for Breast Cancer; Tobacco Use Cessation and Prevention; and Pharyngitis/Sore Throat.
The site also allow you to do your own guideline comparison.

Role of nurse administrators in the clinical setting

This article discusses the role of the nurse administrator in the clinical setting.
  • Maintenance of professional standards
  • Evaluation of nursing practice
  • Selection of courses of action that promote professional growth and yet still ensure accountability to patients and the community.
"Nurse administrators are in ideal positions to address [the questions of professional standards, self-regulation, and self-discipline] and to create a moral climate that will affect positively the actual practice of the profession, its future, and its ethics."
